Lettice and Lovage
Wednesday, August 13 – Saturday, August 16 and
Wednesday, August 20 – Saturday, August 23,
7 p.m., ACA
Lettice, a daffy but enthusiastic expert on
Elizabethan history, is a tour guide at Fus-
tian House, “the dullest home in England.”
Using her vivid imagination and passion, she
theatrically embellishes its historical past with
crowd-pleasing fantasies. Ultimately she must answer to Lotte,
an inspector from the Preservation Trust. Neither impressed
nor entertained by the “creative” history lessons, Lotte fires her.
Not one to give up, Lettice engages the conventional Lotte in a
battle to the death of all that is sacred to the Empire. But Lotte’s
passion for history draws her to Lettice’s romantic world-view
and the two women forge an unlikely friendship in the face of
their dreary modern lives.
This charming and hilarious British comedywon the Tony Award
for Best Play. The hit, by author of
Equus
and
Amadeus
, Peter
Shaffer, featured a triumphant award-winning performance
by Dame Maggie Smith in London and on Broadway. The
New
York Daily News
called it a “celebration of the imagination, a
celebration of the art of the theatre.”
