Discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930, Pluto
was regarded as a planet for 76 years. How-
ever, in 2006, this tiny, strange, eccentric body
was demoted to Dwarf Planet status by the
International Planetary Society meeting in
Prague. The discovery of many other large bodies in orbit near
Pluto’s orbit led to its demise as a planet, but Pluto will remain
a planet in the hearts and minds of many. The New Horizons
spacecraft was launched in 2005 to explore a planet; in 2015 it
will arrive at a minor planet.
