On the way to the Festival, we’ll stop at Collin Street Bakery,
one of our favorites, for coffee and treats. Coming home, we

International Accordion Festival - NEW!
Saturday, September 14, $20 pp
Depart SCPL 12 noon; Return 10 p.m.
Celebrating its 12th anniver-
sary at historic downtown La Villita on the
Riverwalk in San Antonio, the International
Accordion Festival showcases accordion music
with attitude. This is the fourth time we have attended this fun,
educational, and enjoyable event. Experience accordion music
traditions of ethnic, regional and national cultures worldwide.
While dedicated to presenting artists steeped in tradition, the
festival also presents young ensembles that experiment with
fusing traditions and engaging new audiences. There will be
performers on several stages as well as workshops on differ-
ent accordion styles.
The accordion in Texas is a perfect vehicle for telling the story
of immigrant America, unpacking the rich international roots
of our heritage. The accordion is at the root of multicultural
music traditions throughout the world, and many have found
their way to this country and enjoy great acclaim in diverse
parts of the world: Italians, Mexicans, French, Dominicans,
Germans, Irish, Argentines, Poles, Spanish, Czechs, and
many others.
Performers include Chicha Libre, a Brooklyn collective of
multi-cultural musicians who play a mixture of Latin rhythms
and psychedelia; Norbert Slama, with masterful renditions of
Jazz, French Musette, and Gypsy Jazz; Pistolera, a critically
acclaimed New York band, has fans around the world danc-
ing cumbias to the group’s socially conscious songs en español
about immigrants’ rights, war, racism, feminism, and life
on the border; and Qawwali, a traditional Islamic song form
linked to the mystical 13th century sufi devotional tradition

The Texas Hill
Country is filled with good old “Texasocity”
where cowboys are real and an apple is an
apple. We will spend two days in four quaint
hill country towns touring, shopping and exploring. There
will be stops in Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Medina, Bandera
and dinner in Burnet.
The first stop will be Fredericksburg, exploring, eating and
shopping on your own. Our journey then continues to Kerrville.
We will stop at the Coming King Sculpture Prayer Gardens
where seven sculptures have been erected. The “Empty Cross”
is a massive 77’7” steel contemporary sculpture. We will browse
downtown Kerrville before checking into the Hampton Inn in
Kerrville for our overnight stay. Dinner will be on your own
at the Cracker Barrel, within walking distance of the motel.
Day two, after breakfast at the motel, we will visit the James
Avery Retail Store and Headquarters. Our next stop will be
in Medina at The Apple Store. You will pre-select your box
lunch choice of a hamburger or turkey and cheese sandwich on
wheat bread. Chips, drink and an apple strudel are included.
