FITNESS
Athlete of the Month
Julie Roberts, 64, was too self-conscious to work out at the gym in her
hometown of Lufkin, Texas, thinking she’d be surrounded by a pumped-up,
predominately younger crowd with flat bellies, veinless legs, and taut skin.
Not a problem in Sun City Texas.
“I enjoy working out at the fitness centers here because we are all pretty
much in the same boat,” says Julie, who moved here just over a year ago
with her husband of 45 years, Gary. “I don’t worry about what the next
person is doing or what they think of me. People are friendly and enjoying
themselves. I’m amazed at how many different activities are offered here
for all levels and abilities.”
Julie, a former pre-kindergarten through high school assistant principal and
principal, had exercised on and off her entire life, participating in aerobic
activities such as walking, running and swimming, but she had never worked
out with weights or exercise equipment. It would be an unexplained episode
with a stiff and painful “frozen” shoulder and the resulting good experience
with a physical therapist that convinced her to continue working with a
professional. At the Sun City Texas Fitness Center, she has worked with
personal trainer Shepherd Green twice a week for the last eight months.
“Shepherd always has a workout ready for me,” says Julie. “We work up-
per body one session and legs the next. It’s always something different. We
work out with the equipment, the free weights, and what he calls his ‘exotic
exercises.’ I know I’ll probably be sore the day after that workout!”
Julie has seen her energy level soar since she began personal training
with Shepherd. She’s a regular in the Cycle & Core class on Tuesdays and
Thursdays, and she practices several times a week with the Georgettes, Sun
City Texas’ dance and drill team. Plus, she goes for daily walks with Abby,
who recently became a certified therapy dog with Pet Partners.
“Shepherd challenges me every session,” says Julie. “I’ve learned so many
things about exercise and how to use the equipment properly. I am stronger
now than I’ve ever been, and it makes me feel good about myself.”
