Africa, a status jealously guarded by South Africa
until the United Nations forced them to grant Na-
mibia independence in 1990.
Tourists are not drawn to Namibia by the German
influence, although that is still readily apparent in
the architecture of the cities, in the sausages and
beer that are on every restaurant menu, and even
in the 19th-century European dress adopted by the
Herero. Among the draws for tourists are the sand
dunes of Sossusvlei, as red as the evening sky, as
tall as the Eiffel Tower, and arguably some of the
most photographed sites in sub-Saharan Africa.
The desert that is home to the dunes reaches as-
tonishing temperatures (I measured 129 degrees
in the shade one day); so, for comfort, as well as
the best light for photographs, excursions to the
dunes are best done early in the day.
