PICKLEBALL, a sport for a LIFE-
TIME:
It started as a backyard game on an old
badminton court in the state of Wash-
ington in 1965. The game has especially
gained popularity among people over age
50 because the low-impact sport is less
strenuous on the joints, since it’s played
on a smaller court.
“It’s fun, it’s competitive where you’re
challenging yourself, but the skill level
is much less,” said Mike Jizmejian, a
pickleball coach.
“You don’t run as much. You get some
same hand action, the same foot work,
the same thought process, but you just
don’t run as much so it’s easier on your
body,” said Ken Robsion, who picked up
the game recently.
The impact on your wallet is less expen-
sive than tennis since the equipment
is cheaper. A pickleball paddle can cost
around $20-$70, and a pickleball just a
couple of dollars.
Today more than 100,000 people play the
sport on at least 5,000 courts nationwide
and membership in the organization in-
creased more than six fold from 2006 to
2010 according to the USA Pickleball
Association.
Del Webb has been modifying tennis
and basketball courts for pickleball for
the past five years. More than half of
the 50-plus Del Webb communities now
offer pickleball.

Newly retired or a new resident to Sun
City? Looking for a fun hobby that you
never had time to pursue? We build them
and we run them: Airplanes, Sailboats,
Helicopters, Powerboats, Cars, and Off
Roaders. Come and learn how to do it
with a group just like you…lots of mem-
bers, men and women, new to the hobby
along with some seasoned hobbyists who
will show you how. We’re just over two
years old and we’ve grown to over 130
members. We even have a computer
controlled Flight Simulator if you don’t
want to do the “live stuff.” We “fly it” at
the weekly meetings. We also fly heli’s
and small airplanes in the Ballroom
one Sunday a month and do other “fun
stuff” at Berry Pond and our off-site fly-
ing place for the gas and large airplanes.
July schedule: Ballroom fly-in on Sunday,
July 7, 1-3 p.m., and Boating at Berry
Pond on Sunday, July 28, 1 p.m. Oh yes,
informal sailing every Tuesday and Sat-
urday at 10 a.m. at Berry Pond.
We also fly small electric airplanes on the
golf course driving ranges on Monday’s
when a course is closed for play. We need
light wind conditions to fly so our flying
usually takes place in the early mornings
or evenings. If you see us out flying, stop
by and say hello.
