this city famous.
Thursday:
Lunch stop at Chappell Hill BBQ
(included) in Brenham for your choice of meat and sides. Then
we visit Bayou Bend, the enchanting home and gardens of Ima
Hogg. Then it is the opposite extreme as we see the outside of a
house totally covered in beer cans! Finally we will go to a huge
Asian market where you can experience a grocery that sells
things you may have never seen before. Dried squid, anyone?
Our hotel for two nights is the Memorial City Westin Hotel.
Connected to a large shopping center via a sky walk, you
will have your choice of restaurants for dinner on your own –
everything from fast food to upscale dining.
Friday:
After breakfast at the hotel (included), we head to
the National Museum of Funeral History, which contains a
fascinating collection of funeral objects, including old hearses.
At our next stop, half of our group will go to lunch at Treebeards
Restaurant, located within a church. Meanwhile, the other
half will enjoy a docent-led trip to underground Houston, a
tunnel system running for miles under the city and housing
businesses and restaurants. An elevator ride to the top of the
tallest building in the city will provide a panoramic view of
Houston. We will switch venues so that both groups get to eat
and tour the underground. Afterwards, we will return to the
hotel, where you may choose to go to Town and Country mall
or to a restaurant near the hotel for dinner on your own.
Saturday:
After hotel breakfast (included) we will go to the
HoustonMuseum of Natural Science. It will be a glorious finale
to our trip, because following this we will head home to Sun City!

breakfasts, and 1 lunch.

Texas History –
Washington-on-the-Brazos
Lunch – Martha’s Bloomers
Thursday, April 2, $56 pp
Depart SCPL 7:15 a.m.; Return 6:30 p.m.
Ticket Purchase Deadline: Wednesday, March 25
As the forces of General Santa
Anna laid siege to the Alamo, a courageous
group of Texas men gathered in a small
roughhewn building on the banks of the Brazos
River to write a new constitution and declare
Texas independence from Mexico. Hear the story of “Where
Texas Became Texas” at Washington-on-the-Brazos, a story of
quill pens and Bowie knives.
Our story begins at Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site, a
wonderfully preserved example of a 19th century country inn
and stagecoach stop. Yes, Sam Houston did sleep here, as well
as Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant.
Lunch is next at Martha’s Bloomers – an amazing combination
of home and garden décor, gourmet food items and beautiful
tea room. Choose one of the following plated lunches when you
purchase your ticket: Chicken salad croissant sandwich with
tomato bisque soup and peach cobbler ORHoney ham croissant
sandwich with garden potato soup and cherry cobbler. Coffee or
tea and a little browsing are included with your lunch.
Purchase your tickets for CA Sponsored Outings at
or at the Member Services Office.
Tickets for outings listed for the first time will be available
Monday, March 2, at 8 a.m.
