audience into the spirit of the work. This evening’s concert is
Rimsky-Korsakov’s
Scheherazade
. Video, excerpts, and narra-
tion combine to illuminate this exotic musical portrait of master
storyteller Scheherazade. Gain insight into the historical con-
text, Rimsky-Korsakov’s inspiration and more in the program’s
first half. Then hear
Scheherazade
in a whole new light as the
ASO gives a full performance in the program’s second half.
We will begin our evening at the acclaimed Austin restaurant,
Carmelo’s. After a refreshing salad, the entrée will be a com-
bination of lasagna, tortellini with cream sauce, and rigatoni
with meatballs, followed by a luscious dessert. Soft drink, cof-
fee, tea are included. Then it is off to the Long Center for the
performance preceded by the always enjoyable and informative
pre-concert talk. Ticket cost includes transportation, dinner,
and concert.

Beauty and the Beast

Bass Concert Hall - Austin
Sunday, October 12, $105 pp

This classicmusical love story is returning
to Bass Concert Hall in Austin, and we will
attend the 1 p.m. matinee. Based on Disney’s
Academy Award-winning animated film, this
eye-popping spectacle has won the hearts of
millions of people worldwide. This romantic story is filled with
unforgettable characters, lavish sets, costumes, dazzling produc-
tion numbers and the beloved title song. The costumes are a show
in itself from the functioning clock on one of the character’s face,
to the candle-holding Lumiere, to the formal tux on the Beast
and the transformation!

After the matinee, we will travel to the Domain for an early din-
ner on your own (about 4:15 p.m.). There are many wonderful
places to choose from, such as California Pizza, Gloria’s, North,
Albert Finn and, of course, Starbucks.
Ticket cost includes transportation, theatre ticket and driver tip.
Deadline for purchasing tickets is October 8.

Earle Harrison House (Waco)

A true antebellum home
in Greek Revival style, The Earle Harrison
House was built in 1858 on the edge of the
western frontier near Waco. A fine collection
of Victorian furnishings grace the interior,
and the home is surrounded by five acres of beautifully tended
gardens known as The Pape Gardens. Well-versed docents will
guide us through the home and history of this estate.
Amelia’s on the Avenue, a delightful tea room and boutique
shop, will be hosting our lunch. Menu: Amelia’s Trio Plate, a
fresh trio of salads—chicken, vermicelli and fruit—served with
homemade muffins and raspberry iced tea.
