W
hat is Splash Dance? It’s one of
themanyGroup Fitness Classes
offered in SunCity Texas, and a
combination of dance and water aerobics;
and, believe me, it
is
aerobic. The only
time these ladies stopped moving was
to get a sip of water or to check their
pulse every 15 minutes or so. The class
is a cardiovascular, whole-body workout.
The movements included (but were not
limited to) kick, step and hop, gallop, heel
rock, the Grapevine and, my personal
favorite, “Wounded Bird.” Somehow, I
can empathize with that last one.
Participants dance to upbeat songs, such
as
Footloose, Deep in the Heart of Texas,
Oh, What a Night, Living La Vida Loca,
and
Shake Your Booty
. All of the songs
encourage the class to stay inmotion, and
the 15 women in the pool did exactly that.
The other amazing aspect of this class?
It takes place at 8 a.m. every Monday,
Wednesday and Friday. Not only that, but
the instructor dancing around the pool is
none other thanMarnieMarx—the same
woman who taught a spin class at 6:30
a.m., and who also leads a Pilates and a
Power Pilates class. How can one human
being have so much energy? She literally
dances around the pool instructing folks
to “Use your belly!” (and not as a book
rest, like I do), “Activate your core!” and,
of course, to “Shake your booty!”
One of the most remarkable things about
the class was the abundance of smiling
faces. Everyone seems to enjoy themselves
and the energy thatMarnie puts into each
class—any program that makes exercise
fun is a program that people will continue.
So scoot, skip, or shake yourself down to
the indoor aerobic pool at the Texas Drive
Fitness Center. You’ll be glad you did!
