Membership
If you have a yard, you qualify for member-
ship in the Garden Club! No need to have
a “green thumb” or even consider yourself
a gardener. It’s not too late to join. In fact,
fall is the best time in Texas to plant na-
tives and plan for next spring. Dues are
now just $6 for new members, which in-
cludes all programs for the remainder of
2014, including our October Member Ap-
preciation activities. Pay online at www.
sctxca.org, or bring a check made out to
SCTXCA to the August meeting.

Join us on the trail! The Hiking Club will
sponsor more than 89 group hikes this
year, as well as four social events. Hike
destinations include not only nearby sce-
nic areas, such as the San Gabriel River
Trail and Lake Georgetown’s Goodwater
Loop, but also more far-flung locations,
such as Enchanted Rock State Natural
Area and Colorado Bend State Park.
Participants can choose their individual
level of hike difficulty, with trails vary-
ing from three to twelve miles in length.
Potential members are welcome to take
part in an introductory hike. Instructions
for applying for membership are accessed
by clicking on Contact Us > Application
Form. Our extensive website also con-
tains helpful guidelines on hike proce-
dures and equipment.
Activities during August include local
hikes along Lake Georgetown’s Goodwa-
ter Loop, at Berry Springs Park, in Sun
City Texas and at nearby Pfluger Park.
Obtain details on this month’s scheduled
hikes and special events by logging onto
the Sun City Texas website. After access-

Horseshoe Courts
Contact: Tom Minor, 512-863-9811
Are you ready for a new activity? If so,
come and play horseshoes on any Tues-
day or Thursday morning at 9 a.m. We
have nice facilities located behind the
pool. You will be welcomed by President
Sam Gott, who will introduce our other
players. Using our name badges, doubles
teams are determined each day with a
person usually having a different partner
the next time. You can practice alone
if you prefer and join in when ready.
Women are more than welcome to play.
Our main emphasis is on having fun and
fellowship, not competition.
Shuffleboard SIG
Sun City Texas has an active Shuffle-
board group; approximately 20 indi-
viduals belong to the Shuffleboard SIG
and 20 other residents also play at the
two courts (adjacent to Bocce Courts,
and next to Horseshoes and Washers).
The courts are open every day to resi-
dents. Although there is no league play,
members of the SIG and other residents
gather at the courts at
9 a.m.
every Tues-
day and Thursday to play for one hour.
Shuffleboard is fun for individuals of all
ages and all physical abilities. It is easy
to learn and easy to play―an ideal out-
door activity to enjoy with friends and
neighbors. Newcomers are welcome to
join us any time. If you have not played
in the past and would like to be intro-
duced to the game at a time other than
9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, email
Tom Rice at
.

Garden Beds available now.
Contact: Lynsie Lander,
Yes, it’s hotter than you-know-what, but
for members of the Horticulture Club, now
is the time to start planning and prepping
for the fall growing season. Very few veg-
etables can survive the heat, so most beds
are bare while we build the soil with com-
post and other good amendments. Planting
will start mid-August through September,
with broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts,
chard, tomatoes, lettuce, potatoes, peas,
onions and so much more. Many of the
things we plant at this time of the year
will make it through winter and into early
spring.
If you are interested in getting
a bed in time for fall planting, now’s
the time—check our website for info
about renting a bed.
We will not have an August member meet-
ing since so many of our members travel
during the summer. Mid-August starts
our election season; we will need people
to serve on the Nominating Committee, as
well as run for Officer and Board positions.
This is a very important time for our club,
as the Board will direct our club for the
next year. Anyone wishing to participate
on the Nominating Committee should con-
tact the President. Elections will be held
at the October Member Meeting.
And the
Fall Plant Sale
will be on Satur-
day, September 20. We plan on posting a
list of plants that will be available, to help
shoppers knowwhat we will have. Be sure
to check out our website often for updates,
starting two weeks before the sale.
