Hill Country August
(excerpt)
Written by Joy Carchedi, N19
It’s a Hill Country August, it’s hot and it’s dry
And the sun shows no pity as it moves ’cross the sky.
It reaches its zenith and from there it bears down
Till its merciless heat rises up from the ground.
And the rain just won’t come (will it ever come?)
So folks hide indoors till the long day is done.
But I can’t stay in, where it’s dark and so stale,
So I head out the door and I walk toward a trail
That follows a creek bank through woods thick with brush
And its beauty surrounds me and I mustn’t rush
For it’s there that the sun-dappled shadows I’ve seen
’Neath cerulean skies and trees so green
Brown wrens play their games and blue herons fly
And the gray lizards scurry as I saunter by.
Gentle does guard their fawns as they scamper and leap
And as I pass by them I smile as they peep
From under the sage and the cedar and brush
Where they think that they’re hidden from creatures like us.
By the cool, rippling waters where I take my rest
I give thanks to my God for the place I love best.
And it’s there on the creek bank so often I feel
That my heart is so full that it surely will spill
Over with joy, with wonder, with love,
With hope for tomorrow and for help from above.
