Lettice and Lovage
Lettice, a daffy but enthusiastic expert
on Elizabethan history, is a tour guide
at Fustian House, “the dullest home in
England.” Using her vivid imagination
and passion, she theatrically embellishes
its historical past with crowd-pleasing
fantasies. Ultimately she must answer to
Lotte, an inspector from the Preservation
Trust. Neither impressed or entertained by
the “creative” history lessons, Lotte fires
her. Not one to give up, Lettice engages
the conventional Lotte in a battle to the
death of all that is sacred to the Empire.
But Lotte’s passion for history draws her
to Lettice’s romantic world view and the
two women forge an unlikely friendship in
the face of their dreary modern lives. This
charming and hilarious British comedy
won the Tony Award for Best Play. The hit,
