NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
National Night Out (NNO), on Tuesday, Oc-
tober 1, is a citywide event sponsored by the
Community Resource Division of the George-
town Police Department.
National Night Out is an effective way to pro-
mote crime prevention in our neighborhoods.
Residents volunteer to host an event at their
home and invite people on their street, in their neighborhood or in
the immediate vicinity. It’s a great way to get to know and connect
with neighbors. When neighbors look out for each other, there is
less chance of crime occurring in the neighborhood.
WHAT DOES A REGISTERED NNO INCLUDE?
Each registered National Night Out event will include a visit
from Georgetown Police officers. City workers from the Utility
Department, Code Enforcement officers, Animal Control officers,
Georgetown Firefighters (with their fire trucks, which the kids
love!), EMS, and Citizen Police volunteers may also drop by. You
are encouraged to chat with all of them and to ask any questions
you may have.
Each neighborhood’s event can be simple or elaborate. The host
can ask people to bring dishes for a pot luck dinner, or provide
all the food. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be a dinner; the event
could be an ice-cream social or just snacks and drinks. No matter
what, National Night Out events are typically a great deal of fun.
One neighborhood in Georgetown consistently has a huge party
and dance on NNO―they rock the block!
In 2012, there were 28 parties scattered throughout the city.
An estimated 1,100 to 1,500 people participated by hosting or
attending an event.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE
The 2013 event will be held on Tuesday, October 1.
The deadline
for registering an NNO event is September 15.
Applications
submitted after that date will NOT be scheduled on the list of
events. The events should be scheduled between 6:30-9 p.m. The
host can set whatever hours he/she chooses; for instance, the event
may be from 7:30-9 p.m.
You can go to the Georgetown Police Department at 809 Martin
Luther King and pick up an application in person. To access the
information from your computer, go to the City of Georgetown
website (
) and click on the link for the Police
Department. You can then click on the “Programs & Services” tab
that will give you access to the online application. When we receive
your application, we will reply to you via email. If you have any
other questions, don’t hesitate to contact the Community Resource
Division of the Georgetown Police Department at 512-930-2588.
