FITNESS
Athlete of the Month
Steve Ricks
Steve Ricks played football, wrestled and ran track in high school. In col-
lege, he says, “you name it and I probably played it.” Post college, the now
67-year-old Sun City Texas resident lightened his athletic load to flag football,
softball, golf, SCUBA and coaching baseball.
So when his golfing buddies started giving him grief about participating in
an aerobics class comprised mostly of women at the Sun City Texas Fitness
Center, he did what any self-respecting man would do. He dared them.
“I invited every one of them to come participate in the class and see if they
can make it through just one hour,” says Steve. “No one has taken me up on
my offer to date so I don’t catch much flack about it anymore.”
“And,” he adds, “my hat is off to the ladies. JB’s class is a real workout.”
“JB” is personal trainer and aerobics instructor Judy Baier, who has guided
Steve through a structured fitness program since he moved to Sun City in
2007 fromHouston, where he managed the engineering and construction of
refinery and petrochemical plants. “JB initially organized my weight training
routine. Now we have periodic check ups to make sure that my technique,
weight and reps are solid,” says Steve, who’s a regular in JB’s Tuesday Bal-
anced Body class, plays golf up to 4 times weekly and follows each personal
training session with a 2-mile treadmill run. His inspiration comes from the
men and women he sees working out at the Fitness Center―many of them
far more dedicated and physically fit than he thinks he’ll ever be.
Steve is sold on the importance of having a personal trainer review his prog-
ress. “Any work you put in at the Fitness Center is good for you,” he insists,
“but if I am going to do the work, I want to be sure I’m doing it the right
way and getting the maximum benefit. With weight training in particular,
it’s important that you use the right technique and that you use the right
amount of weight, and the right number of sets and repetitions.”
So with a fitness routine in place and his self-described “engine” overhauled
with bypass surgery following the early detection of heart disease, Steve has
just one dare left―a dare directed squarely at himself. “Now I’m supposed
to go out and enjoy my retirement,” he jokes. “Not a bad deal!”
