It was smooth sailing for
Suzy Rummel and husband
Pete when they both
decided to retire early and
enjoy cruising their 47-foot
sailboat from their home
in Southern California to
areas along the Pacific coast
of Mexico. They eventually
moved to North Carolina,
swapped the sailboat for
a 48-foot ocean trawler,
and cruised the east coast
from New England to the
Bahamas. For 16 years the
couple happily relaxed and
toasted good times on the
deck of theirMagic Dragon,
all-the-while haplessly
overlooking their expanding
waistlines.
“After moving to Sun
City nine months ago, we
realized how much our
casual living had added to
our waistlines and lack of
stamina,” says Suzy. “We
wanted to feel the energy
and enthusiasm for life that we’d had in the past.” So immediately after
orientation at the Cowan Creek Fitness Center, the former registered nurse
and healthcare administrator signed up for personal training sessions with Sun
City Texas personal trainer Marilynn Pagano. “We never had the opportunity
to access professional trainers, nor the convenience of having a fitness center
just minutes fromhome,” Suzy notes. “We feel privileged to live in a community
that encourages fitness at all levels. There is something here for everyone.”
She says “success” is what encourages her to maintain her current personal
training regimen. Suzy works out twice a week with Marilynn and once a
week on her own, using the weight machines, free weights, stability ball, and
core-strengthening floor exercises. “My husband and I realized the wisdom
of customizing our programs,” she says. “Marilynn has gradually increased
the variety and complexity of my workouts. I continue to be amazed that my
balance is improving, and at no time have I had sore muscles. Small aches
and pains are gone.”
The sailing enthusiast and former snow skier is a Philadelphia native who
once raised and showed Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Pugs. Walking, however, is
now a favorite pastime, and Suzy often pairs her four-mile walks with another
favorite hobby—reading—on the treadmill. “Exercise seems to have increased
mymetabolism to burn away those retirement pounds,” says Suzy, who is also
quick to credit the LightenUp for Life programwith accelerating her successful
loss of 16 pounds. “Just today I was able to slip on a favorite pair of slacks that
I haven’t been able to wear for many years. They fit!”
