moved D.J.’s 93-year-old mother in with
them to share in the excitement as they
waited for the day when they would buy
their Sun City Texas home.
Settling on a Decision
The official groundbreaking was held on
the new Del Webb Sun City property on
May 17, 1995. Not long after, portable
buildings were set up onWilliams Drive,
and activity increased to a frenetic pace.
The Corbells were assigned an
appointment for June 15, 1995 to visit
the property and select their lot and
house plan. Only 140 lots were available.
There were no homes yet built, model or
otherwise; the temporary offices used
computer-simulated renderings and
designs to show the planned amenities
and the 13 floor plans. Despite the
limited inventory, the enthusiasm of
the Del Webb employees made up for
the rudimentary facilities.
On that appointed day, a salesperson in
a white van met D.J. and Nathan and,
driving down a dirt road, took them out
to the lots they were considering for their
own. It only took a fewminutes for them
to select 107 Whispering Wind, where
they still happily reside. The Corbells
knew that this was where they wanted
to live, and had already decided they
wanted a Cypress model, so back to
the portable office building and a few
signatures later, they became the first
home buyers in Del Webb’s newest Sun
City Texas!
Construction on the house began in fall
of 1995, along with the model homes and
amenities. To see the progress on their
home, they were required to wear hard
hats and be accompanied by a salespeson.
Construction was ongoing and happening
everywhere at once; however, on February
19, 1996, the house was finished. The
Corbells moved in only a few days later
on February 26.
A Growing Community
Early buyers were also recruited to get
the Del Webb and Sun City name out into
the surrounding communities. The early
buyers became ambassadors and would
visit home shows to talk to prospective
resident and pass out brochures. The
group was referred to as the “Ask Me’s”
and traveled throughout Texas to tell
people about Sun City. They must
have been great sales reps, as two of
Nathan’s brothers moved here—and now
a daughter and her husband live here!
D.J. said it was an exciting time, with
mass building of homes and model
homes, a golf course being worked on, and
everywhere men working. D.J.’s mother,
as the oldest resident (living with D.J.
and Nathan), soon became their mascot.
D.J. added that while it was exciting back
then, it’s still just as exciting today with
lots to do and lots of friends with whom
to enjoy life.
Both love their lifestyle here, and say
it was the best move they ever made.
They are glad to have been here from
the beginning; watching Sun City Texas
come to fruition and being part of it all.
D.J. and Nathan’s home has undergone updates, including the landscaping; how-
ever, their original love for Sun City Texas and their home has remained constant.
