E
ach year, on the last Monday in
May, Sun City Texas residents
gather to honor the men and
women of our armed forces who have
given their lives in service to our coun-
try. The 2014Memorial Day Ceremony
will be held onMonday, May 26 at 9:30
a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Plaza.
Hosted by the Veterans Memorial
Advisory Group (VMAG) of Sun
City Texas, the Memorial Day Cer-
emony typically features an elected
official as guest speaker—this year,
we’re honored to welcome Dr. Charles
Schwertner, our Texas state senator,
as speaker.
Also, the ceremony will include music
provided by the 36th Infantry Divi-
sion Band of the Texas Army National
Guard and color guards fromGeorge-
town and Stony Point High School
ROTCs, the Georgetown Fire Depart-
ment, andWilliamson County EMS—
as well as a special flyover performed
by Falcon Flight, a Texas-based for-
mation flying team. The flyover will
be directly over the Plaza, and will
utilize a “missing man” maneuver, in
which one of the planes abruptly pulls
out of the formation.
Prior to the flyover, memorial wreaths
will be placed at the two walls by
county and city officials assisted by
Sun City Texas resident veterans.
Following the ceremony, guests are
welcome to attend the reception held
on the Social Center Patio.
Pre-Memorial Day Concert
The evening before the ceremony,
Sunday, May 25, the 36th Infantry
Division Band of the Texas Army
National Guard from Camp Mabry
will present a concert at the Plaza.
The band will perform a variety of big
band sound and patriotic flag-waving
tunes at 7 p.m.
Both events are free and open to the
public—join us as we give thanks to
those who answered the call of liberty
in service to our country.
The Casualties were Nominal
Submitted by Jack Pitts, N03,
in recognition of Memorial Day
“The casualties were nominal”
the small print read today.
“Just 10 killed and 40 wounded”
they seem content to say.
...and the casualties were nominal.
The blind will remain ever in darkness,
the disfigured will ever be maimed.
They will be given a heart and purple
ribbon;
slight tribute to the mangled and lame.
...and the casualties were nominal.
The fallen rest in their silence
brought home as the heroic dead.
Government-issued marble markers
will be laid at each of their heads.
...and the casualties were nominal.
To the unaffected millions
the losses seem so small,
But to those who have done the losing,
this day they have lost it all.
...and the casualties were nominal.
