with brilliant streams of improvisatorymusicianship. Thismusi-
cal heritage pulls fromthe cherishedmusicality of Ella Fitzgerald,
Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fats Waller, Cab Calloway, and
Slim Galliard. The four piece’s distinct variety of this smoking
intoxicant is known as ‘swingadelic’ for its panoramic aesthetic
sprawl. Fusing an authentic command of American roots music
with wry wordplay and freewheeling hippie ethos, the Jitterbug
Vipers energize and vibrantly reimagine a movement in music
long shackled in by nostalgia and overly reverent revivalism.
Lunar Eclipses: Lines & Shadows
Astronomy Lecture by Ken Van Lew
Monday, April 14, 9 a.m., SCB, $5 pp
Open Seating Theater Style
We will experience a total lunar eclipse in
Austin just after midnight early on April 15,
2014, that can be viewed from indoors. The
Greeks in the 4th Century BC used the earth’s
shadow during lunar eclipses to conclude that
the earth was round. Unlike the narrow 170-mile band visible
in solar eclipses, lunar eclipses can be viewed by more than
half of the earth. This program will show beautiful pictures
and animations of how eclipses occur.
