What to Expect From Your Board
The Election Committee conducted a CA Board Campaign
Workshop on January 24. The Workshop Agenda outlined a
number of important issues that candidates running for the
Sun City Texas Community Association Board of Directors
should know that would assist them in a campaign. The pre-
senters addressed important topics: Qualifications, Campaign
Filing, Organizing the Campaign, Campaign Marketing and
Publicity and Resources. The Workshop was well attended
and attendees left with a comprehensive understanding about
running a campaign.
As a sitting Board member, I will address another important
issue:
what should you expect from your Board?
Directors need a strong sense of fairness and dedication along
with a commitment to be an active boardmember with a positive
attitude. A board member should be dedicated to promoting the
best interest of the total community, not promoting personal
interests. Directors need to embrace team building, respect
each other and recognize that the final goal is to represent the
residents. Only these attributes will cause residents to trust
their Board members.
Directors need to be familiar with how the community oper-
ates. This community has an operating budget of more than
$15,000,000, so Directors need to know about the budget, com-
mittees, policies that determine how funds are expended, con-
tracts, reserves and rules. Having knowledge and experience
in these areas is an advantage for a Board member. Above all,
Board members must be familiar with their responsibilities
as outlined in the Articles of Incorporation, By-Laws and the
CC&Rs.
The Board should seek input fromall segments of the community
on an ongoing basis. The Board is responsible for setting the
direction of the Association, not only on a yearly basis with the
Board Goals and Objectives, but also for the future to insure
the financial stability and lifestyle of the Community. In doing
so, trust and respect for the work of the Committees and Staff
are important.
Sometimes, the Board will make difficult but sound decisions
that may be unpopular. These decisions are made to protect
the value of every homeowner’s investment and our lifestyle.
A sound and effective working Board utilizes the expertise of
the Association attorney and Executive Director as well as
outside experts.
Often, I am asked, “What do you do as a Board member?”
