Managing Urban Natural Areas
Urban natural areas have become a part
of many urban-suburban developments.
In the Texas Hill Country, often the
result is a juniper (cedar) forest mixed
with other native and invasive plants.
With time, these natural areas become
potential wildfire hazards, and can in-
crease flooding potential and drastically
change wildlife habitat. Management of
natural areas is limited by governmental
regulation, but, as Nature Club member
Dr. Paul Ohlenbusch will discuss, there
are ways to reduce wildfire and flooding
potential while improving wildlife habitat
over time.

Pet Club members, friends of the Sun City
Pet Club, and other residents of Sun City
Texas opened their hearts and pockets to
support the club’s annual holiday toy and
treat drive. Club President Tom Olsen’s
garage overflowed with donations from
generous folks.
Among the gifts were three dog carriers,
three dog crates, 105 pounds of cat litter,
180 pounds of dry dog food, 115 pounds of
dog treats, 80 cans of dog food, 115 cans of
cat food, and 25 pounds of dry cat food. A
lot of pet dishes will be filled from these
items.
In addition, there were dog toys, leashes,
collars, etc. Towels, old blankets and new
blankets were included in the haul to keep
animals snug and warm in the 16 dog beds
also donated. (I can just picture our four-
legged friends in the three local area shel-
ters being well-fed and comfortable in the
cold winter weather we’ve been having in
Central Texas.)
The Pet Club Officers, but most especial-
ly the unclaimed animals in the county,
thank our friends and neighbors for giving
so generously to those in need.
