FITNESS
For four years, Joan Keith
enjoyed the benefits of
group water aerobics at
the Sun City Texas Fit-
ness Center. The buoyan-
cy of the water, she says,
made her feel energetic
and more flexible. But a
funny thing happened on
the way to the aerobics
pool one day. As Joan
followed her usual path
through the fitness center
―past the free weights,
weight machines, and
cardio equipment – she
began to wonder if it was
time to towel off, leave
her comfort zone behind,
and face the challenges of
dry land. She wanted to
be stronger, but she was
certain she would need
someone patient and kind
to teach her how to use all
the unfamiliar equipment
and weight machines.
That person turned out to be personal trainer Judy “JB” Baier, who has
been working with Sun City residents since 1996. She has guided Joan
through twice-weekly sessions for the past three years. “JB knows about my
body and its failings,” says Joan, 78, who confesses to having a multitude
of aches and pains. “JB won’t recommend a machine until I’m ready for it.
She also reassures me that, in my case, it’s not the amount of weight I put
on the machines, but the number of repetitions that is most beneficial.”
According to JB, Joan is determined to maintain and improve her overall
health. “She realizes how important it is to keep moving and never give
up,” says JB. “She gives every session her very best. We actually have fun
while we’re working out.”
A former short-distance runner who played catcher on her high school
softball team, Joan spends 12 minutes on the Nu-Step Cross Trainer to get
her heart pumping before each 30-minute session with JB. Afterwards, she
says she feels “wonderful and ready to take on the world.” She is convinced
that strength training has extended her life, since both of her parents died
at the age of 59. Not only do the workouts keep her aches and pains in
check, she says, but they also allow her to eat out on a regular basis with
her husband, Chuck, and to guiltlessly embrace her fondness for chocolate.
Joan, a San Francisco native and a retired principal with the Los Angeles
Unified School District, is happy she found the courage to leave the com-
fort of the pool and explore the many strength-training options available
at the Fitness Center, where―thanks to JB―she no longer feels like a fish
out of water.
