Opossums in Sun City
Submitted by R. Cryan, Wildlife Management Committee
There are more than 60 different species of opossum, which are
often called “possums.” Themost notable is the Virginia opossum
or common possum – the only marsupial (pouched mammal)
found in the USA and Canada.
Opossums are one of the cleanest animals around. They groom
and bathe themselves meticulously, sometimes stopping several
times before finishing eating.
They mate once a year, but have two litters, one in the spring
and one in the late fall. Summer gestation is a fast 13 days and
as many as 25 are born and make their way into the pouch. A
female opossumgives birth to helpless young as tiny as honeybees.
Babies immediately crawl into the mother’s pouch. Opossums
may give birth to as many as 20-25 babies in a litter, but fewer
than half of them survive.
Opossums are nocturnal animals and scavengers. They often
visit human homes to raid garbage cans, dumpsters and other
containers. They are attracted to carrion and can often be spot-
ted near road kill, where they more than likely will be struck
by vehicles. They also eat grass, nuts and fruit. They will hunt
mice, birds, insects, worms, snakes, and even chickens.

Golf Carts & Grandkids: Just Say NO!
Many grandchildren will be in our community for the spring
break holiday, and the temptation will be there to allow them
to drive the golf cart. However, it is against the law to allow
them to do so; it is also extremely dangerous. Please, DO NOT
let them get behind the wheel; you might be ticketed. Wouldn’t
that be embarrassing in front of your grandchildren?

CA NEWS
Since January 1, the Covenants Committee has only had to
address three incidents. Unfortunately two dealt with conduct
between neighbors—the type that should be avoided in our
great community. We sincerely encourage all residents to find
mutually acceptable solutions rather than shift the burden
to the committee. However, when that doesn’t happen, the
committee has to take action as shown here.
These animals are most famous for playing “possum.” When
threatened by dogs, foxes, or bobcats, opossums sometimes flop
onto their sides and lie on the ground with their eyes open, star-
ing fixedly into space. They extend their tongues and generally
appear to be dead. This ploy may put a predator off its guard
and allow the opossuman opportunity to escape. Opossums are
immune to rattlesnake venom, rabies and distemper.
