A
s an age restricted community
with an average age of 71, it is
only natural that from time to
time we are confronted with the dif-
ficult task of dealing with dementia-re-
lated issues. While I am not an expert
on this subject nor are we an assisted
living facility, it is important for us
as a community to understand this
sensitive subject and be able to help
those it affects in a proper manner.
As such, the intent of this article is to
remind the community that dementia
exists in Sun City Texas, and while it
surfaces in a variety of ways, we should
not turn our backs on this matter but
approach it in a manner that is sup-
portive, informed and caring.
As withmost municipalities, social ser-
vices are available within the city and
county structure to assist families who
are dealing with dementia-related is-
sues. The same is true withWilliamson
County and the City of Georgetown.
While the private sector has a multi-
tude of services available, here are a
few services and nonprofit organiza-
tions that provide aging resources here
in Williamson County.
AGE of Central Texas

AGE of Central Texas provides educa-
tion and support to people all along the
spectrum of growing older, no matter
where they are on that journey. Pro-
grams include: licensed adult day
health care programs in Round Rock
and Austin, caregiver education and
resources, early memory loss support,
health equipment lending, and peer-
based computer classes for seniors.
The Caring Place

The Caring Place provides emergency
assistance to families in crisis in the
following ways: financial assistance
through rent, utilities, medical expens-
es, temporary shelter and transporta-
tion; and non-financial assistance with
food, clothing and household items. The
Caring Place’s feeding programs are
Fresh Food for Families, Our Daily
Bread, and Hope; their annual pro-
grams are Coats for Kids, and Thanks-
giving and Christmas food distribution.

Volunteers provide transportation
services free of charge to area seniors
(ages 65 and up) for medical appoint-
ments, grocery shopping, and other
important errands.
Family Eldercare

Family Eldercare provides in-home care
and caregiver support so that your loved
one can live at home safely and comfort-
ably. Additional support services include
geriatric consultation, service coordina-
tion andmoneymanagement. Rates are
on a sliding fee scale based on the client’s
income. Family Eldercare is licensed,
insured and bonded.
WBC Opportunities & Meals on
Wheels

includes the Meals onWheels Program
that provides hot, home-delivered
meals five days a week to those who,
due to illness, age, or disability, are
unable to provide proper nutrition for

Slips & Falls
Town Hall
Wednesday, March 6, 9:30 a.m., SCB,

Each year one in every three adults age 65
and older falls. Falls are a major threat to
the health and independence of people 65
and older and the leading cause of injury
death (CDC).
On Wednesday, March 6, at 9:30 a.m.,
you are invited to attend a Slips and Falls
Town Hall in the Social Center Ballroom.
The program, sponsored by the Emer-
gency Management Committee, will fea-
ture the SetonWilliamson Trauma Direc-
tor, Williamson County EMS Director,
Texas Home Health physical therapists
and St. David’s Georgetown Rehab Direc-
tor. Recognize your risk for falls, watch
demonstrations on how to prevent falls,
and learn what you can expect during
recovery. Refreshments will be served.
Golf Talk Town Hall
Thursday, March 7, 3 p.m., SCB, FREE!

There will be a Golf Talk Town Hall on
Thursday, March 7, from 3-5 p.m. in the
Social Center Ballroom. This is an op-
portunity for residents to meet the golf
operations staff, as well as learn more
about golf in Sun City. Everyone is invited
