In Roman history, Ides were days in the middle of the month―
for example, in March, the 15th―which was originally a festive
day, but made more famous by being the day of Caesar’s death.
At this time of the year, our big Ides day is in mid-May―the
time when we have an election for directors for the CA Board
of Directors.
In preparation, we have candidate applications available in
March; in April, the candidates’ filing dates and the beginning
of campaigning; and the voting. All of these are important
dates for Sun City―for the resident voters, as well as the
candidates themselves.
Your Election Committee recently held a workshop to educate
the community on what it is like being a director; the qualifica-
tions for being a director, and some valuable tips for conducting
a successful campaign. All of this was done to encourage more
residents to become more involved and offer themselves as
candidates for the board. This was well presented and will, I
am sure, be helpful to those thinking about running.
Now, how do we get the community equally prepared for this
election? First of all, learn as much about the candidates as
you can through their flyers, signage, appearance at public
events, and probably most importantly, by attending “Meet
and Greet” coffees and other such gatherings sponsored by
residents.
Next, what are the characteristics or traits that are important
to you for a candidate to possess? Obviously, they must have
some background in business and management―the CA is
a big business and the directors need to have a basic under-
standing of business practices to deal with the many matters
that come before them. They must be good communicators and
good listeners. To me as a voter, however, the most important
thing is trust―we are entrusting these persons with the power
to make decisions which affect our everyday life. And I must
be able to trust that a candidate will be honest with me, will
have the community’s best interest in mind at all times, and
have no hidden agenda or mission to accomplish other than
to serve the community.
Whatever you need to do, let’s get prepared for the Ides.
