The Country Western Dance hosts dances monthly with both live and recorded music. The February dance will be at 7 p.m. on
Friday, February 22 in the Ballroom with live music.
I
f you’re like me you have a hard time
getting off the sofa—both literally
and emotionally. It’s really not that
comfortable, but home is. I think Sun
City homes were built for burrowing.
Who wants to escape from our cozy
dens? It’s so easy to enjoy the peace,
quiet and natural beauty of our neigh-
borhoods.
The Country Western Dance club en-
treats you to get moving. They offer tra-
ditional country western dancing, such
as: 2-step, waltzes, polkas, and swing
dance. Membership is $12 a year and
it covers admission to monthly dances
with both live and recorded music.
There may be additional charges for
special events.
I attended the post-Christmas dance on
December 28, 2012. The Weldon Hen-
son Band was playing, and the dance-
floor was busy, but not overcrowded.
The dancing (due to cowboy boots) is
a light-footed glide rather than a flat-
footed shuffle. What I witnessed on the
dance floor was, indeed, gliding. Some
dancers seemed almost effortlessly mov-
ing around the floor—it was a delight
to watch. The clothing worn included
fringed skirts and concho belts, cowboy
and cowgirl hats. There were beards
and bandanas, leather vests and bolo
ties, and boots, plenty of colorful boots.
Outside the Ballroom, I spoke to club
members W.R. and PamHelge, as well
as Carol and Charles Banks. They were
in the lobby taking pictures. They told
me they also attended dances outside of
Sun City at any one of the Honky Tonks
in Central Texas. They mentioned that
the members are friendly and welcom-
ing. They also were proud to tell me
that the club donated more than 900
pounds of food to The Caring Place this
past winter. It was the second such do-
nation in 2012. Just another way Sun
Citians support the community.
Give the left side of your sofa a night off,
and give yourself a night out. Listen to
the music, of course, but why not learn
to glide? Look up the Country Western
Dance Club at www. sctxca.org > Clubs
& Groups > Country Western Dance…
you’ll be glad you did! For more infor-
mation, see page 121.
