The Multiple Sclerosis Society de-
scribes MS as a disabling disease
of the central nervous system that
disrupts the flow of information within
the brain, and between the brain and the
body. Its cause is not fully known, but its
numerous and unpredictable symptoms can
include fatigue, muscle weakness and walk-
ing difficulties. Worldwide, it afflicts some
2.3 million individuals, mostly women.
Barbara Stricklin is one of them. The first
thing you notice about her, however, isn’t
her unsteady gait or her walker. It’s her
smile. At 68, the Sun City resident is in-
herently happy, fiercely independent and
amazingly active. On Mondays, Wednes-
days and Fridays, she’s often one of several
early arrivals to the 10:30 a.m. Sit-n-Fit
group fitness class at Texas Drive. They
gather at the table in the Fitness Center
lobby to socialize before the popular hour-
long class begins.
