’50s and ’60s. Our fall dances will be on
Friday, September 18 and Saturday, No-
vember 14 to recorded music. All dances

room. Doors open at 6:30 and all dances

Pet
Contact: Tom Olsen, 512-639-2085 or
For those of you who enrolled in the three
training classes that Ruth Olsen began
last month, you are probably learning a
lot about dog behavior as well as yourself.
Usually, it is the owner who needs a little
help along with the dog. Ms. Olsen also
offers classes and certification for those
pet owners who wish to form a therapy
team with their dog. Email the pet club
for more information.
The holiday toy and treat drive during
December was a huge success. Thanks to
you, over 100 lbs. of pet food, more than
150 toys, 48 custom made pet blankets
as well as crates, carriers, towels, and
other items were donated to local animal
shelters. We cannot express how much
the homeless dogs and cats appreciate
your donations.
Our Pet Partners Therapy Dog teams
completed over 1700 hours of volunteer
work in 2014. We will continue to expand
this community outreach program.
Training Tip:
Training should be ongo-
ing throughout the life of your pet. There
are countless opportunities during the
day to train with your pet, even if it is
only for a 10-second session. Begin with
requiring your dog to follow one com-
mand, such as a simple “sit” just prior to
putting down his food bowl. This teaches
your dog that you (the Alpha dog) are in
command and that all good things he
receives comes from you. Most of all, it
teaches the dog to
listen
and
react
to what
you tell him to do.

Pickleball
Contact: Nancy Grafton, 512-417-0627
or
Pickleball is a fun, active game that com-
bines the elements of tennis, badminton,
and ping pong. Played on a doubles’ bad-
minton court with paddles and a perfo-
rated plastic ball, all it requires are work-
out clothes, court shoes and a desire to
play the game. Whether you are new to
pickleball or are a seasoned veteran with
tournament experience, you will find a
level of play suited to your needs.
Our club offers a free introductory train-
ing class for beginners. It provides a fun-
damental overview of the skills needed to
play the game. We also sponsor a Mentor
Program, in which some of our more ex-
perienced players assist beginners with
rule assimilation and suggestions on tech-
nique. Of course, the best way to become
proficient at pickleball is to actually play
the game. Courts 5 and 6 are reserved for
beginner use every Monday and Thursday
afternoon from 3 – 5 p.m. If this sounds
like the game for you, contact our Player
Development Director, Richard Bradley
at RLbradley1963©gmail.com to sign up.
More experienced players can improve
their skills by competing in league play
and participating in advanced training.
For more information, visit our website at
. It contains a wealth of
information including a link called “Club
Hours.” This page lists the days, times
and court assignment for ability groups,
leagues and open club periods. You will
also find web links to external sites with
guidance on rules and strategy, as well as
recommended vendors for new equipment.
