Calling their style of play “recreational,
with a tinge of competitiveness,” the
members of the Sun City Texas Softball
Club (SCTSC) start their season in late
February and continue play through
May. Members take their play seriously,
because while they want to have fun,
they also want to win, and if I’ve learned
anything in this life, it’s that we can’t
all be winners.
Consisting of nine teams fielding eleven
players each, the SCTSC presently
boasts a total of 164 members – that
is, until
you
join (yes,
you
reading
this article, wanting to be a kid again,
shagging flies and aiming your bat
at the fences)! Everyone on the team
gets a turn at bat. Everyone. Amazing!
Hitting is the best part!
Just think:
even I can get my turn to strike out.
The SCTSC plays by Senior Slow Pitch
Rules, which are specifically designed to
minimize injuries. In Slow Pitch games,
runners are encouraged to overrun
bases, sliding is prohibited, and pinch
runners are allowed for those with bad
wheels (a baseball term for bad legs).
Both games and practices take place
at Del Webb Field which, if you still
haven’t been, you’re in for a pleasant
surprise. It’s a first-class field, complete
with shaded bleachers, water fountains,
and a 100-foot Jumbotron (just kidding
– though the field does feature softball
players, live and in color, the way Abner
Doubleday meant it to be).
Annual dues for softball club
membership are an initial $12, then
$10 for each subsequent season. For
further information contact Thomas
Davis at 512-843-9465 or trdavis101@
