Committees in Sun City
In the seven years that I have been in this great community,
much has been said about our committee system, its importance
inmaintaining our operating structure, and the need for resident
participation – all of which is true. Not all of this, however, is
always said in a positive manner. I’d like to take this moment
to shed light on some of the responsibilities of Sun City’s elected
directors that aren’t always appreciated or fully understood.
Sometimes, I hear that the Board makes its own decisions which
may or not follow a committee’s recommendations; therefore,
our committees are not important. It is true that, yes, in any
particular instance, the Board may choose to move in a direction
other than that which is recommended by a committee; however,
committees are responsible for the information, facts, resident
views, impact analysis, and other crucial information necessary
to making an informed decision. The data, public sentiment, and
overall conclusion a committee presents on any given topic heavily
influences a final ruling and, over time, provides the Board with
a richer understanding of the community at large.
Committees often become deeply invested in their particular
interests. As a director, however, I aim to stay informed on a
broad scale. A good example of this can be seen in the Property
and Grounds committee which, each month, inspects selected
amenities and provides the Facilities staff with recommendations
on repairs or upgrades needed on that facility. Through their
cooperation, I am kept abreast of many subjects, rather than
getting cornered into any one issue.
Though these are just a couple of small examples, the impor-
tance of committees and the vital input they provide cannot
be overstated. Their efforts and information, both individually
and as a whole, allow us to make the best possible decisions for
Sun City. And, after all, that is our main objective. If you are
considering joining the ranks, please know your efforts will be
much respected and appreciated.
