Q
igong (pronounced “chee-gung”)
is an ancient Chinese practice
that aims to cultivate “qi,” a
Chinese word best translated as vital
energy or life force, through posture,
breathing and mental focus. Similarly,
the second part of Qigong, taken from the
word “gung,” is Chinese for accomplish-
ment or skill through steady practice.
Altogether, the Qigong is meant to be
a system practiced for increased health
and vitality.
Through the combination of specific
movements and stationary poses, breath-
ing techniques and concentration, par-
ticipants focus on self-healing through
circulating qi fromwithin themselves to
cleanse and heal the body. Some prac-
tices also focus on storing qi or emitting
qi with the goal of helping those individu-
als and the world around them.
The style of Qigong is similar to that
of Tai Chi and Kung Fu; however, it is
suitable for all ages.
The gentle, fluid nature of Qigong can
help reduce stress, build strength, in-
crease stamina, and enhance the im-
mune system. According to the National
Qigong Association, the practice also has
been found to improve cardiovascular,
respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and
digestive functions.
This form of exercise is practiced world-
wide, and locally offered by the Alterna-
tive Healing &Wellness Club of Sun City
Texas. Every Monday, Wednesday and
Friday, members gather for exercise in
the Atrium of the Activities Center at
8 a.m. Their goal: to start the day with
enhanced energy.
