Fort Hood, Texas – The Great Place - NEW!

Travel to Fort Hood, Texas,
home to two full divisions, 1st CavalryDivision
and the 4th Infantry Division (mechanized),
which includes infantrymen, cavalrymen, tank-
ers, engineers, mechanics, and health care pro-
fessionals. Fort Hood celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2012
and takes great pride in being the largest active-duty armored
post in the US Armed Services. Upon arrival at themain gate, a
Fort Hood soldier will board the bus and stay with us throughout
the day. Requests to visit different sites have been made to the
III Corps Public Affairs Officer (PAO). Due to the mission of
Fort Hood and its soldiers, the final decision as to which sites
are available for our visit is made by the PAO. Lunch will be at
the dining facility.
Notes: This tour requires getting on and off the bus sev-
eral times andwalking on uneven ground. Cameras and
cell phones are permitted. You should bring any snacks
you may want with you. COOKIES for the soldiers are
always welcome! They should be in a Ziploc bag or a
disposable container. Bring your driver’s license or gov-
ernment-issued photo ID with you on this trip.

Pearce Civil War & Western Art Museum,
Corsicana - NEW!

In1991, Charles Pearce purchased
a gift for his wife, Peggy. That gift was a letter
fromthe Antietambattlefieldwritten by Joshua
Chamberlain to his wife Fanny. This letter
sparked an ongoing interest in collectingCivilWar documents and
the eventual donation of the Pearce’s collection toNavarro College
in Corsicana. Experience the four tumultuous Civil War years
through letters, diaries, documents and artifacts. Well-versed
docents will lead us through this remarkable museum where
videos and interactive elements bring the war to life. The Pearce
family are also collectors of Western Art, and their collection of
235 works by well-known artists tells the story of the historic
and modern American West. You may self-tour this collection.
Lunch inCorsicanawill be “on your own” with choices fromCollin
Street Bakery, Applebee’s, Chili’s, Whataburger, or Schlotzsky’s.
Dessert is up next at the Russell Stover Candy Shop. Chocolates,
baked goods, fudge, ice cream, frozen custards, plus a room full
of “whoops” candies.
Our final history lessonwill be at OldFt. Parker nearMexia. Step
back in time to that fateful springmorning in 1836, whenParker’s
fort was attacked by Indians and five hostages were taken. The
most famous of the captiveswas CynthiaAnnParker. She became
the mother of the last great Comanche Chief, Quanah Parker.
Note: Wewill make a coffee stop at theWacoCollin Street
Bakery on our way to Corsicana.

Anderson Mill & Old Town Round Rock - NEW!

Did youknow that AndersonMill was origi-
nally a community, population of 30, named
after Thomas Anderson who moved here from
Virginia? In the 1860s he set up amill tomake
gunpowder for the Confederate Army, and the rest is history.
The Anderson Mill Gardeners who take care of this historical
landmark will give us a short history lesson about the “man and
his mill.” Then we will go inside the mill, walk the grounds and
visit their small museum.
Next it’s on to Old Round Rock where you’ll enjoy lunch on your
own at Louisiana Longhorn, Star Café, Junior’sGrill or theKrave
Bistro. (I’ll provide menus on the bus ride for you to check out
on the way.) After lunch, I’ll lead you on a walking tour of the
historical buildings. As we walk by the plaza with its modern
sculptures and fountains, we will also go inside their new Art
Center. Thenwe are on our way to see the original “RoundRock,”
Chisholm Trail statues and old cemetery where “special guests
reside.” Can’t wait to tell you all about them!
Note: Therewill bemuchwalking over unevenpathswith
stones and cracked pavements and some steps. Also, we
will be getting on and off the bus several times.
