When osteoarthritis and
poor circulation began to
rob Suzy Chancellor of her
mobility a few years back,
Sun City Texas personal
trainer Shepherd Green
came to the rescue, creat-
ing a program for her that
she says “included just
about everything—includ-
ing how to walk properly.”
He even led her through
exercises designed specifi-
cally to relieve her sore and
stiffening hands and feet.
Then, just over a year ago,
Shepherd came to Suzy’s
rescue a second time when
his trained eye detected a
subtle loss of weight and
muscle strength. He sug-
gested that a visit with
her doctor was in order,
and subsequent medical
tests revealed Suzy, 85,
suffers from an autoim-
mune disorder that is now
controlled withmedication
and twice-monthly infu-
sions. “Shepherd keeps his eye on me,” says Suzy. “If I have pain in my legs,
Shepherd will work on that area, and I always feel better. Everything I do is
designed to help some part of my body and its growing needs.”
Suzy is a former elementary school teacher who earned both her bachelor’s
and master’s degrees from East Texas State University. She and husband
Warren are native Texans who met and married after World War II and
moved to Austin so that Warren could study pharmacy at the University of
Texas. Both were active supporters of UT sports and went on to encourage
athletics for both their daughter, who excelled in cheerleading, and their son,
who excelled in golf and turned professional. Dedicated Longhorn fans and
world travelers, the couple retired to the then-fledgling community of Sun City
Texas in 1996. Nowadays, they happily enjoy the best that this community
has to offer. Warren, 89, plays nine holes of golf three times a week, and Suzy
works out with Shepherd twice a week at the Fitness Center.
“We have loved being early residents of Sun City,” says Suzy. “We welcomed
each facility, knowing it was being built for our comfort and enjoyment. The
Fitness Center offered so much to enjoy. I loved the indoor pool and the water
exercise. As I became older, I became less active and began to give in to my
health problems. When I finally decided to get back to the Fitness Center,
Shepherd was the person who acquainted me with what was available for my
special needs. I’m a true believer in the fact that we all need proper exercise,
no matter what age you are.”
