FITNESS
Athlete of the Month
By Lynda Dufour
It was the oversized coffee table in her
living room that did it. Just a little
shove in the wrong direction caused
JanWatson to end up flat on her back
in excruciating pain from a fractured
vertebra. Doctors at Scott & White
were able to stabilize her spine, but
subsequent tests confirmed the real
culprit. Jan had osteoporosis.
Lean and petite, exercise came natu-
rally for the Kansas native who grew
up roaming the family farm, taking
dance lessons, and competing in the
local 4-H club. As a teenager, she
marched as drummajorette with the
high school band. Speed and distance
walking became favorite pastimes as
an adult. But while all those activi-
ties were helping her develop a strong
heart and lungs, she’d discover they
had done little to strengthen muscles
and bones. It would take the Sun City
Fitness Center and personal trainer
Don Moore to do that.
“The two years of working with Don
have flown. I feel stronger physically,
plus my mental acuity is noticeably
improved,” said Jan, a retired teacher
who now authors instructional math
books, conducts math workshops, and
mentors student teachers. “A trainer
has his eye on you. He knows if you’re
using the correct muscles. He can
watch those muscles work. I train
with Don because he keeps me on
task to assure the correct use of dif-
ferent equipment, and he increases
the weights in a timely, appropriate
manner.”
After just one year of weight train-
ing, scans showed a definite increase
in Jan’s bone density. She felt better
physically, mentally and emotionally.
But the ultimate test of her strength
was yet to come. In late 2011, doc-
tors discovered she had a calcified
aortic valve and aneurism. Successful
surgery at the Mayo Clinic was fol-
lowed by a rapid recovery, which Jan
attributes to Pilates, speed walking,
and her personal training sessions
with Don.
“In spite of the valve almost being
closed,” she said, “it was offset by the
strength I had developed.” The young
nurses, all 20- and 30-something,
were amazed to find they didn’t have
to help her out of bed the first day.
She laughs at the memory. Going
strong at 70-something, Jan Watson
still has a few lessons to teach.
