Charlotte Hohensee
Personal Trainer: John Rutan
By Lynda Dufour
Athlete of the Month
C
harlotte Hohensee remembers
the day she hit bottom. It was
the day she struggled to get herself
off the floor where she’d plopped it to
watch television—a respite from the
office chair where the same bottom
had spent the previous eight hours.
She was 40 years old at the time.
“I couldn’t believe that my mind felt
young and strong and my body was
so weak. I was too young to be old,”
says Charlotte, who became com-
mitted to working out. “I started
running and eating a low carbo-
hydrate, small-portion diet. As the
weight came off and I started feeling
better, and looking better, I added
weight-lifting.”
These days, Charlotte runs three
miles 2-3 times a week and lifts
weights twice a week for up to 45
minutes, which she insists is cru-
cial. Working with weights is a
challenge that teaches her patience.
She’s rewarded, she says, with a
strong body, low blood pressure,
peace of mind, and contentment.
“I’ve been using workout equipment
for many years,” she adds, “but I
really saw results when I learned
to use the equipment correctly. If
you have never utilized the services
of a personal trainer, get one. Your
workouts will be more effective
when you understand how to use
the equipment, how it impacts your
body, and how you should breathe.”
Charlotte, a real estate agent with
the Stacy Group focusing on Sun
City Texas, is a California native
who grew up in San Antonio. Her
athletic abilities became apparent
in junior high. “My sport was track
and field—relays, high jump, long
jump, the 60-yard dash, and dis-
tance running, which I loved best,”
she says. “Running has improved
my mind, body and spirit. The quiet
of the morning allows me to spend
time with my thoughts and prayers.”
She’s convinced that working out
helps her embrace all of her daily
activities—along with an occasional
Mexican martini—with the vigor
and enthusiasm that the 40-year-
old who struggled to get up off the
floor so sadly lacked.
And that, she’ll tell you, is the bot-
tom line.
