Water Matters
Submitted by Carlton M. Mathis,
Sun City Texas Water Management
A healthy yard can be determined by the
depth of its root zone. It’s been established
that one inch of water a week will keep your
yard healthy through the summer months.
In terms of watering days, less frequent
watering encourages root zones to grow
deeper searching for more water.
Watering too frequently does not encourage deep rooting of
trees, shrubs or flowers. If faced with drought and a prolonged
lack of water this summer, it is the plants with shallow roots
that will suffer and succumb first because they will not be
able to access water that is available deeper in the soil. It is
important to irrigate the soil deeply and water less frequently
to encourage deeper rooting.
This month’s success story comes from Neighborhood 50:
Home owners in Neighborhood 50 have been on a water con-
servation program since June of 2014. The neighborhood par-
ticipation rate is now more than 50 percent of homes having
some type of drip irrigation, water pressure regulation or
xeriscaping. Drip irrigation in the flower beds versus spray
heads has reduced the water wasted by 1,000 gallons a month
a household during the growing season.
If you have a success story you would like to share, please
email it to me at [email protected]
The Water Matters Team is available to help familiarize you
with your irrigation system. If you need help setting up your
controller or would like a complete and thorough evaluation
of your irrigation system, send an email to WaterMatters@
SCTexas.org, or contact your Neighborhood Representative.
A Water Matters Ambassador will come to your home to as-
sist you.
