According to a June CDC report, the 2014-
2015 influenza season was especially severe
for adults 65 and older.
Viruses change constantly, and each year
experts must pick which viruses to include
in the flu vaccine.
Pneumococcal disease also causes thousands of infections each
year such as meningitis, bloodstream infections, pneumonia
and ear infections, according to the CDC. Pneumococcal vac-
cines are good at preventing serious disease, though they are
not guaranteed to prevent infection and symptoms in everyone.
CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months
and older as the first and most important step in protecting
against influenza. The CDC also recommends for persons 65
and older a vaccine to protect against pneumococcal disease.
Please consult your health care provider to determine the flu
and pneumonia vaccines that you may need and the schedule
you should follow in receiving the vaccines. If you develop
symptoms, with or without vaccines, you should see a health-
care professional.
Sun City EMC and Walgreens will provide a Flu and Pneu-
monia Vaccine Clinic in the ballroom on Wednesday, Sept.
30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
