“You can make a difference”
Let’s start with the basics when it comes to
using the Automatic External Defibrillator
(AED):
A. AEDs ARE ACCURATE AND EASY TO USE.
The
important thing is you TRY even if you feel absolutely
terrified and have not been trained. Simply put, an AED
is a machine with a computer inside that can recognize a
heart problem that requires a shock. It will tell a rescuer
when a shock is needed and give a shock when needed.
There are four simple steps for using an AED.
1. TURN AED ON. Follow the prompts you see and hear.
2. Attach the pads on the victim as directed by the
illustrated instructions.
3. Let the AED check the victim’s heart.
4. Push the shock button if the AED prompts you to do so.
AEDs can be used on adults and children age one year
and older.
B.
Call 911 and get the AED as soon as possible. Re-
member, if you are not trained in CPR (Cardio-Pul-
monary Resuscitation) or in the use of an AED, the
dispatcher will walk you through the steps.
Now, let’s
assume you are alone and have a cell phone with you, call
911 and get the AED. Begin CPR. Follow the dispatcher’s
instructions the best you can. Be sure to let the dispatcher
know you have access to an AED. If you are not alone,
begin CPR and have the other person call 911 and get the
AED. For an adult, use the AED as soon as it is available.
C. Do you know where the 12 Community Association
AEDs are located throughout Sun City?
Yup, I said 12.
Many of us walk by one every day, but probably are unaware
it is on the wall! Each machine is checked monthly by the
CAMaintenance Staff to be sure it is in working order and
the pads are in-date. The defibrillators are located at the:
• Ball Park/Dog Park—Wall inside the Ladies’ restroom
• Wood Shop—Wall at the First Aid Station outside the
Ladies’ restroom
• Tennis Courts—Wall on the restroom building hallway,
near the drink machine
• Billiards Center/Pickle Ball Courts—Wall outside the
Billiards Center front door
• Social Center—Wall behind the Monitor’s desk
• Texas Drive Craft Center—On the wall outside the
restrooms
• Texas Drive Fitness Center—Wall in the fitness ma-
chine/weight room
• Texas Drive Activities Center—Wall behind the Moni-
tor’s desk
