Let’s Communicate!
Jim Romine, Executive Director
T
raffic safety is an ongoing con-
cern of the Board of Directors
and staff at Sun City Texas.
With spring approaching, traffic safety
becomes even more important, as this
is the time of year when children visit
Sun City. Given that fact and the over-
all concern for safety, we urge all Sun
City residents to comply with traffic
laws and to drive safely.
Driving in Sun City Texas is a rela-
tively safe endeavor, as traffic volume
and speed limits are typically lower
than those you might find on roads of
similar size outside of Sun City. In ad-
dition, a vast majority of drivers in Sun
City obey traffic laws and drive safely.
Unfortunately, the few who don’t obey
traffic laws create the potential for ac-
cidents. You don’t need to be a traffic
engineer to understand the importance
of driving safely in a community where
golf carts are driven alongside full-size
vehicles. In addition to golf carts, many
residents ride bikes in Sun City Texas.
Regardless, I suggest residents exer-
cise extra caution when operating a
vehicle around bikers.
Given that Sun City Texas is a golf
cart community, golf carts are allowed
to operate on public streets under cer-
tain circumstances, which include: 1)
an orange slow vehicle triangle dis-
played on the back of the golf cart; 2)
golf cart operators must posses a valid
drivers license; 3) golf cart operators
must obey traffic laws. Essentially, golf
carts should be seen and treated as a
regular vehicle. Actually, drivers of golf
carts should be especially mindful and
compliant with traffic laws since golf
carts provide much less protection than
cars. Suffice it to say, persons without
a valid drivers license (especially chil-
dren) should not drive golf carts. Page
57 of the 2012-2013 Resource Guide
and Directory provides good informa-
tion on the Texas Golf Cart laws.
Residents often ask why the Commu-
nity Association (CA) does not take a
more active role in enforcing traffic
laws. Some residents have even sug-
gested that Citizens on Patrol (COPs)
volunteers issue traffic tickets to viola-
tors. In reality, neither CA employees
nor COPs volunteers have any authori-
ty to enforce traffic laws, as the George-
town Police Department is responsible
for monitoring and enforcing traffic
laws in Sun City. It should be noted
that Georgetown police officers actively
patrol Sun City streets, enforce traffic
laws and
issue tickets.
The CA will do all it can to promote
traffic safety in Sun City and the
Georgetown Police Department does
all it can to maintain safe streets. How-
ever, these efforts are effective only to a
point and, in the end, the safety of our
streets depends on individual drivers.
In closing, I encourage all residents to
obey traffic laws and drive carefully,
especially when driving golf carts. No
one wants to be in an accident, espe-
cially one that causes injury. So…
Please obey traffic laws and drive
safely.
