Friendly Reminders
Submitted by Jim Romine,
Executive Director
I have been asked to please remind those who walk their dogs on our sidewalks and trails to be mindful of other walkers and to please keep your dog close to you or to your right when people are passing on the left. Additionally, some time ago I worked with the Pet Club on some reminders when using the long expandable flex-lead type leashes. Here is that reminder: Be careful when using flexi-lead type leashes with your dog. These are the 15 to 25 foot retractable/extendable leashes that a lot of folks use when walking their dogs throughout Sun City. When approaching other dogs and/or people, you should have your dog close to you. This way you can easily control your dog and prevent problems. When walking near the streets or on the street, be mindful of the fact that your dog can react and chase something into the street, perhaps in the path of an oncoming car, faster than you can react and lock the leash. While walking on the trails, this much lead can allow your dog to get deep into the weeds and trees, where they might encounter a rattle snake or other dangers.
The Pet Club suggests that a six to eight foot lead is the ideal length for dog walking. This still gives your dog freedom to roam a bit, while giving you the ability to better control and protect your dog.

Facility Closures Due to COVID-19 Precautions
To further combat the spread of COVID-19 in Sun City Texas Community Association, indoor and outdoor facilities will remain closed until further notice (with the exception of golf and horticulture club).
- The CA Board reviews and approves each transitional guideline for indoor and outdoor activities but must also obtain the approval of the County and Pulte before the approval process is complete.
- The CA Communicator each week will identify the activities that have been given approval to resume transitional operation. The Communicator will also include a link to the club or group’s approved transitional guidelines.
- It is resident responsibility to read, understand and agree to follow the transitional guidelines.

More than 200 Crafty and Thrifty Sun City Volunteers
|
|
Not always do you see an entire community coming together for one cause. As Williamson County responds to the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the nation, Sun City residents have become role models when it comes to pitching in and helping out. Women and men alike have rolled up their sleeves and sharpened their scissors to become part of Williamson County’s Mask Brigade, creating cloth safety masks for first responders and healthcare professionals.
Since establishing an assembly line at The Worship Place, more than 200 volunteers have created 7,000 masks, all of which have been delivered to the Williamson County COVID-19 Community Organizations Active in Disaster group (COAD) for distribution.

Pedestrian Crossings Add
Safety Features
Pedestrian crossings with signs, button-activated flashing lights and crosswalk striping have been completed at eight intersections on Del Webb Boulevard and Sun City Boulevard. The City of Georgetown worked with the Sun City Texas Community Association to identify intersections with the highest numbers of pedestrians for the addition of these safety features. The $632,132 project to enhance the crossings was recently completed.
The crossings were added to two intersections on Del Webb Boulevard - at Scissortail Trail and Texas Drive - as well as six intersections on Sun City Boulevard:
- Salt Creek Lane
- Texas Drive (south intersection)
- Whispering Wind
- San Saba Drive
- Texas Drive (north intersection)
- At Sun City Park (softball fields, dog park and community gardens)
The crossings include yellow signs with arrows on both sides of the street. Each crossing has solar-powered flashing beacons that are activated by pedestrians with a push-button. Solar panels and batteries allow the flashing beacons to be activated at night as well as daylight hours. The pedestrian crossings also include sidewalk improvements and ADA ramps.
Activating a flashing beacon: When pedestrians approach one of the crosswalks, they can push a button to activate the flashing lights. The lights will flash for approximately 60 seconds to alert drivers that pedestrians are present. State law requires drivers to stop at a marked crosswalk when pedestrians are present. Vehicles must yield to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk, even when a flashing light is not present or activated.
Pedestrians should be aware that even though they have the right of way in a striped crosswalk, the flashing beacons serve as an alert to drivers and are no guarantee that vehicles will stop.In keeping with our COVID-19 precautions, pedestrians should press the button with something other than their bare hand. After activation, wait to make sure it is safe to cross.
If a driver approaches a crosswalk and the beacon is flashing, but no pedestrians are present, then the driver may proceed with caution.

Know the Basics—Pedestrian Safety
10 Walking Safety Tips
- Be predictable. Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals.
- Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available.
- If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible.
- Keep alert at all times; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes (and ears) off the road.
- Whenever possible, cross streets at crosswalks or intersections, where drivers expect pedestrians. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right.
- If a crosswalk or intersection is not available, locate a well-lit area where you have the best view of traffic. Wait for a gap in traffic that allows enough time to cross safely; continue watching for traffic as you cross.
- Never assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact with drivers as they approach to make sure you are seen.
- Be visible at all times. Wear bright clothing during the day, and wear reflective materials or use a flashlight at night.
- Watch for cars entering or exiting driveways, or backing up in parking lots.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs when walking; they can impair your abilities and your judgment.
