Chair, Water Matters subcommittee of the NRO

Helping Sun City Texas residents under-
stand and manage their irrigation systems
has been a top priority of the Water Matters
subcommittee. Over the past three years,
the group has worked hard to develop
different ways of reaching residents. The neighborhood Water
Ambassador Program helps residents program their irrigation
controllers. Unfortunately, not all neighborhoods have Water
Ambassadors. In 2014, the subcommittee developed the Water
Evaluator Program. Water Evaluators were trained to assess the
entire irrigation system and to look for issues that would keep
the system from watering efficiently. This program has been
well received by the community with over 1,200 evaluations in
the past two years.
This year, the committee decided to take the message of irrigation
system management and water conservation on the road with
the development of the Water Matters Roadshow. The Roadshow
covers three areas: system controller settings and use, information
on spray nozzles and drip irrigation for flower beds and steps you
can take to manage and conserve irrigation water.
The Roadshow started in April and has visited four neighbor-
hoods so far, averaging 38 residents per visit. The presentation
is kept to 60 minutes, so it is not a huge commitment of time for
residents. Each Roadshow has a resident host who opens their
garage and yard for the presentation. Residents are asked to
bring a chair and get ready to learn things they may have never
thought to ask, hopefully making the controller and irrigation
system less mysterious.
If you would like to learn more about your irrigation system and
how you can conserve water, then you should consider hosting a
Roadshow in your neighborhood. The process is simple.
First, contact your neighborhood rep and let them know you
are interested in hosting. Pick a few dates and times that work
best, then go to the Water Matters website and complete the
Neighborhood Roadshow request form. Someone from the Water
Matters Team will contact you to confirm the date and time that
works best for all.
You will find the Water Matters website by logging into
www.sctexas.org and clicking the orange Neighborhood Rep
Organization button. Then, scroll down and click Water Matters
in the left navigation. From there, look for the Roadshow Request
Form tab.
