Dance instructors kept Karen Pavey on her toes when she Sometimes you get waylaid by bad habits. If you’re not doing it
studied with the New York City Ballet as a young adult. correctly, you may as well not be doing it at all.
“And there is my perfectionist coming out,” she says, laughing.
Nowadays, that’s Shepherd Green’s job.
                                                                                                                                                              ONLINE: SCTEXAS.ORG
Shepherd might not be familiar with an arabesque or a pirouette,
but the longtime Sun City personal trainer makes a point of
keeping Karen on her toes with new and challenging workouts
twice each week at the Texas Drive Fitness Center. He is totally
familiar with the weight and cardio training necessary to keep
Karen young and active now that she’s retired from her longtime
career in the retail department for the Ritz Carlton Division of
Marriott Corporation.

“I appreciate the focused dedication that Karen brings to each
session,” says Shepherd, who has worked in the fitness industry
more than 40 years. “Karen is a very intense person, and our
sessions are very intense. They always last 30 minutes and
sometimes we will go for an hour. We work out on the machines
and we use free weights, the stability, medicine and Bosu balls,
and we do floor exercises.

“Karen has a perfectionist personality,” he adds. “If we do some-
thing that she doesn’t get exactly right in our session, she goes
home and works on it. The next time I see her, she’s improved.”

In turn, Karen appreciates Shepherd’s knowledge and pro-
fessionalism. She began working with him 15 months ago,
she says, because she wanted to learn how to properly use the
weight machines and free weights. Their training partnership
has continued because she’s seen such a dramatic increase in
her strength and energy. The New Jersey native says she’s also
impressed with Sun City’s fitness centers, and claims they’re
among the best she’s come across in her world travels.

Karen contends that without Shepherd’s steady supervision it
would be easy to develop bad form, which could delay progress
and cause injury. “It’s so important to focus on the technique,”
she notes. “Having been a dancer, I can tell the difference.
