Do you have items in
your house that have the
signal words “Danger,”
“Warning,” “Caution,”
“Flammable”, “Poison,”
“Corrosive,” or “Toxic” somewhere on the
label? These words usually appear above
or below the contents of the container. Did
you know that cooking sprays have the
words,
Warning-Flammable
? Drain
cleaners have the signal words,
Corro-
sive-Poison
.
Hazardous household waste is any chemi-
cal or item that has either (1) Been con-
sumed (2) Expired or (3) Been “discarded.”
Hazardous household waste products
should never be poured out on the
ground, down the drain, or thrown out
with regular household trash. Improper
disposal can cause injury from contact
or contaminate groundwater and drink-
ing water.
Hazardous household waste products in
your home might include:
• gasoline
• paints, stains and paint thinners
• insect and weed killer (poison or toxic)
• automotive oil, fuel additives
• batteries (wet cell), car, lawnmower
etc.(corrosive)
• mercury (broken thermometers)
• art and hobby chemicals
The above list is by no means inclusive.
Other items that have gained the dis-
tinction of “Hazardous Waste” include
computer, camera and cell phone bat-
teries and fluorescent lights and tubes
containing metal mercury.
If you use compact fluorescent lights
(CFLs), these may be recycled at Home
Depot; however, they will not take fluo-
rescent tubes. These (along with the
other items listed above) can be taken
to the Williamson County Recycle Cen-
ter via the City’s voucher program for
household hazardous waste.
