GOLF
Punch Card Balances
Submitted by Erik Beyer, PGA, Head Golf Professional, Legacy Hills
As we move toward the latter months of
2014, we are seeing a number of golfers
with punch cards nearing zero balances.
To check your punch card status, view
your monthly CA statement or contact
one of the Pro Shops. If you need to reload
with more rounds, you may do so at the
same per-round rate. Please remember
that 10 rounds is the minimum number
of rounds you must purchase.
most ease, and were growing better than
the greens at both Cowan Creek and
Legacy Hills. The early-March ice storm,
coupled with disease pressure and possi-
bly herbicide residual (from the selective
herbicides to control a very resilient Poa
annua*), contributed to the undesirable
conditions we experienced.
(*Note: We made five total herbicide ap-
plications using the labeled rates and fre-
quency, and applied them under the total
maximum allowed per area on the label.)
What measures have we
taken for turf recovery?
The most beneficial, albeit controver-
sial, decision was to close the greens
and utilize temporary greens at White
Wing. Although not a popular measure,
it relieved areas under stress from ad-
ditional foot traffic and allowed us to
perform daily cultural practices without
disturbing play. On May 6, we closed the
greens and opened temporary greens
on all 18 holes at White Wing. Legacy
Hills was temporarily switched to white
flags to permit us to alter pin placements
and reduce foot traffic on weak areas.
We also implemented a turf recovery
fertility program at both Legacy Hills
and White Wing to help expedite the
recovery process.
We encountered several weeks of weath-
er-related setbacks during recovery; how-
ever, June provided ideal temperatures
and adequate sunlight to complement our
cultural and fertility programs. We’ve
re-sodded the larger weak areas on both
courses and have begun to use more ag-
gressive cultural practices (hand-spiking
weak areas; aerifying with deep tines,
pencil tines, hollow tines; frequent heavy
topdressing, spiking, etc.).
How do we prevent DAMAGE
TO THE GREENS in the future?
This winter/spring was a learning experi-
ence for superintendents across the nation.
Although we have no control over Mother
Nature, we are now aware of how we can
proactively combat potential stresses in
the future. We plan to strengthen our
fungicide program, extending it from
late-fall to late-spring on a preventative
basis. Timing is the key to have needed
fungicides down on the plant and in the
soil when disease stress is at its highest.
We also plan to utilize more pencil tine
aerifications in winter months, when tem-
peratures permit, giving more oxygen to
the rootzone. With that, soil moisture will
be strictly monitored daily to ensure that
both air and moisture content are at ide-
al levels. We will become more judicious
with our greens covering program and
err on the side of caution with upcoming
forecasts. The winter fertility programs
will focus on replenishing nutrients to the
rootzone in case of drastic temperature
changes. Poa annua was a large nuisance
over the winter and spring, but we hope to
manage this with a timely application of
a newer herbicide that has shown control
as a pre-emergent herbicide.
We look forward to a successful second
half of the year, and want to thank ev-
eryone for their support, encouragement
and patience during this time.
