crisis within Georgetown and Northern Williamson County,
from clothes and food, to helping pay bills. The services of-
fered are made available through donations, both monetary
and material, fundraisers, as well as the Shops at the Car-
ing Place, a thrift store which generates 60 percent of the
organization’s revenue. The Caring Place is always looking
for volunteers, including phone operators, greeters, client ad-
vocates, and data entry workers. Learn more about upcoming

Each year, the Sun City Shriners decorate the entrances and
bridges of Sun City Texas the day after Thanksgiving. The
purpose of the Shriners’ Holiday Lighting project is not only
to bring cheer to those in the community, but also to provide
for their main charitable mission—the Shriners Children’s
Hospitals in Houston and Galveston. The Shriners ask the
Sun City Texas community to donate whatever they can in
return for the enjoyment of the lights. Donation bins are located
at the Social Center and Cowan Creek Amenity Center, but
can also be taken by club officers or mailed in. See the Sun
City Shriners website for more informaiton. All donations are
fully tax deductible and 100 percent goes toward the hospitals.

Each year near the holidays, it’s hard not to miss bell-ringers ac-
companying the Salvation Army red kettle at large grocery and
department stores. The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign
began in 1891 as a local project in San Francisco to provide
Christmas dinners for those in need. The project has grown
and now assists more than 4.5 million people worldwide dur-
ing the holidays and year-round. Locally, The Kiwanis Club of
Sun City partners each year with the Salvation Army, raising
over $15,400 in 2012 alone. Bell-ringer volunteers are needed
to work two-hour shifts from November 28 through December
24. To donate or to volunteer, contact Joe & Cheryl Schmid at
the information above, or donate online using the website given.
