Known as the master of couture by Dior, Spanish fashion designer Balenciaga dressed Spanish royalty until the Spanish Civil War forced him to close shop in 1937; he reopened in Paris to immediate applause. Balenciaga’s famous black ensembles used heavy fabric, intricate embroidery and lace, and his fame spread as he opted for sleek lines instead of usual hour-glass dresses.  In 1955 he showcased the tent dress - a favorite of mine (Ellen’s), followed by the high waisted dress and my (Ellen’s) absolute favorite, shortened bracelet sleeves.  To prevent public knowledge of how many Balenciaga’s Jackie Kennedy wore, the President’s father paid the bills. The House of Balenciaga designed the French Olympic team’s 1992 outfits.  Nicole Kidman wore Balenciaga for the 2006 Oscars.  Over 100 of his hand-made pieces are on display.

The museum is also hosting works by another Spanish artist, Goya. Seventy-five of Goya’s black ink on white paper drawings symbolizing night and day are displayed as well as the museum’s permanent works by Goya. An added treat is next door at the Amon Carter Museum where 80 miles of thread in 18 colors fill the atrium with a giant indoor rainbow.

We will stop going and returning at Slovacek’s.  Lunch is on your own at the Museum Café or other restaurant choices.

Ticket cost includes transportation and museum entrance.  Maximum tickets:  46
