Basic Photography Workshop

Event Date: Friday, June 16, 2017
Event Time: 2:00 pm
Event Category: Workshop

Bring your camera(s) and manuals.  Point & shoot and DSLR are welcome.  We’ll bounce back and forth.  I carry/use both.  We won’t be covering Idevices.

Differences between P&S and DSLR:

  • interchangeable lenses,
  • control over the big three – shutter speed, f/stop and ISO, and
  • viewer (through the lens, rangefinder, led screen)

We’ll talk about how those impact you.

Who’s got what?

Discussion – review of equipment.

Okay, here are some basics:

  1. Patience – things change

Ansel Adams / Tim Wolf

  1. Exposure – some tricks.  Think about icons.  Bracketing.  Point and move.  When in doubt, underexpose.
  1. Get close – change lenses, zoom up, step forward – unless…
  2. Step back – get the big picture
  3. Near & Far – love near stuff.  Think about DOF.  What do you want to show?  Icons can screw you up.  Think it through if you can.
  4. More near & far – show scale.  Pyramids aren’t big unless you make them big.  Find a reference…
  5. Depth of field:
  • Here’s the big one
  • The balloon triangle
  • Who’s lost?

Flipchart – triangle, light coming into sensor, perfection – 100 ISO, f/22 @ 125 – impossible

What’s most important for your shot?
