Horticulture club re-opens gardens
Submitted by the Board of Directors
This week following input from Williamson County, the CA Board of Directors voted to allow the Horticulture Club to re-open effective this past Wednesday, April 22. This re-opening allowance was based on a plan that was developed by the Club to address the new social distancing requirements. From speaking with the County, agricultural type activities are not restricted but social distancing must still be observed. As such, the Club is allowed to continue with their operations after they have planted their crops as long as they are properly social distancing and not gathering in any groups.

Friendly reminder: exterior lighting
Submitted by Carl Zimmerman,
Community Standards Director, 512-948-7461
The Design Guidelines does not prohibit exterior lighting after 10 p.m. Rather, it recommends that exterior lights should only be illuminated from sunset until 10 p.m. Motion-activated lights are encouraged in the Design Guidelines. If installed, motion-activated lights must be equipped with a timer and that timer must be set for no more than 10 minutes. As with all exterior lighting, the fixture must be fully shielded, focused on the homeowner’s lot, adjusted so that the motion sensor is only activated by movement on the homeowner’s lot and does not create a hazard, a nuisance or substantially interfere with the peaceable use and enjoyment of neighboring properties.

Pedestrian crossings add
safety features
Pedestrian crossings with signs, button-activated flashing lights, and crosswalk striping have been completed at eight intersections on Del Webb Boulevard and Sun City Boulevard. The City of Georgetown worked with the Sun City Texas Community Association to identify intersections with the highest numbers of pedestrians for the addition of these safety features. The $632,132 project to enhance the crossings was recently completed.
The crossings were added to two intersections on Del Webb Boulevard at Scissortail Trail and Texas Drive as well as six intersections on Sun City Boulevard:
- Salt Creek Lane
- Texas Drive (south intersection)
- Whispering Wind
- San Saba Drive
- Texas Drive (north intersection)
- At Sun City Park (softball fields, dog park, and community gardens)
The crossings include yellow signs with arrows on both sides of the street. Each crossing has solar-powered flashing beacons that are activated by pedestrians with a push-button. Solar panels and batteries allow the flashing beacons to be activated at night as well as daylight hours. The pedestrian crossings also include sidewalk improvements and ADA ramps.
Activating a flashing beacon: When pedestrians approach one of the crosswalks, they can push a button to activate the flashing lights. The lights will flash for approximately 60 seconds to alert drivers that pedestrians are present. State law requires drivers to stop at a marked crosswalk when pedestrians are present. Vehicles must yield to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk, even when a flashing light is not present or activated.
Pedestrians should be aware that even though they have the right of way in a striped crosswalk, the flashing beacons serve as an alert to drivers and are no guarantee that vehicles will stop. Pedestrians should press the button and wait to make sure it is safe to cross.
If a driver approaches a crosswalk and the beacon is flashing, but no pedestrians are present, then the driver may proceed with caution.

Let's talk trash
Submitted by Debbie Bruner
Sun City Texas Recycles
Extra trash
Trash outside of carts is not collected unless they have bag tags. Routes are designed to ensure the trucks have enough capacity to collect the entire route between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Normally, a truck with a team will make 1 or two runs (go out and collect, empty at the Transfer Station and go back to collect more) to complete a route.
In some cases right now, the teams are making 3 or more runs.
If residents have extra trash, here are some things they can do:
- Work with the Sun City Recycling club to find places to dispose of unwanted materials (depending on what the material is) that could be recycled or reused instead of land filled. Call businesses first to confirm they are open and accepting items. Store items if possible, until then.
-
Use their bulky collection to dispose of it. Call TDS (Texas Disposal Systems) at: (512) 930-1715 to schedule a bulky collection.
- Separate yard trimmings (collected with a different truck) in paper bags or other container marked "yard trimmings" (do not dispose of in black trash bags).
- Purchase bag tags for $5 per bag from Customer Care at the Georgetown Utility Complex at 300 Industrial Ave so that we can plan for the extra trash and have additional resources ready.
- Dispose of a little extra over time instead of all at once.
The volume of residential waste being collected is up about 30%, and the volume at the Transfer Station (people dropping off) is up 84%. Everyone is cleaning and disposing of extra waste and that's great - it's a good time to do those things. But we want to manage that extra material as efficiently as possible.
Flushable wipes
Secondly, please do not flush the "flushable wipes" down your toilet. They actually don't break down very fast and are clogging our wastewater lines. I know the containers say flushable and but it's not true. Cities all over the place are having issues with clogged wastewater lines because of these wipes.
