Volunteers & "Evacuees" Needed!
EMC Emergency Response Drill
Monday, Mar. 18
In support of the Sun City Emergency Preparedness Plan, the Emergency Management Committee (EMC) conducts an annual Emergency Evacuation Drill. The exercise is designed to help test the community response to a hypothetical situation, such as a natural or man-made disaster, and evaluate our volunteers’ readiness to respond.
Evacuees are Needed: 9 - 10:30 a.m.
To make this drill as realistic as possible, residents are needed between 9 - 10:30 a.m. on the day of the drill to act as evacuees seeking shelter, injured victims needing first aid and evacuees with pets seeking shelter. No sign up necessary, simply visit one of the Evacuation Centers; the Social Center Ballroom or Cowan Creek Amenity Center. If you have a dog, you may go to the Activities Center or Cowan Creek Pavilion.
Volunteers Needed
Consider volunteering to be on an evacuation center call list. Volunteers are needed to help register evacuees, provide first aid, help residents with pets, and help with the physical setup of centers. Volunteer training sessions are scheduled several times a year. Please contact Barbara Akers at [email protected].

Responsibilities of Pedestrians
Over the years I have published reminders to motorists about the need to be safe when out and motoring about, but not so good about reminding pedestrians that they too have responsibilities when it comes to safety on the roads. As a pedestrian, you should always use good judgment and not interrupt the flow of traffic. Here are a few good reminders/ tips for pedestrians from the Texas Department of Transportation.
Use Sidewalks
When there is a sidewalk, use it! Most pedestrian traffic accidents happen when someone is walking in the roadway. Be very alert when crossing any roadway. Stay on the right-hand side of crosswalks. Drivers are supposed to yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks.
Cross at Intersections and in Crosswalks
Yield to vehicles on the roadway if you cross the street at a place other than a marked crosswalk or pedestrian tunnel or crossing. If you're hit while jaywalking, the driver may not be liable, and his or her auto insurance may not cover your injuries.
If the road has no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.
Pedestrian Safety Tips
- Always cross at intersections. Look left, then right, then left again before proceeding.
- Look for traffic when stepping off a bus or from behind parked cars.
- As a passenger, get in or out of a car on the curb side of the street.
- Make eye contact with drivers before you cross the street.

It's Bat Season - Watch Your Grandkids & Pets!
Spring is the time when Mexican free-tailed bats arrive in Central Texas. City of Georgetown Animal Services officers captured 27 bats inside buildings during the month of February. All bats tested negative for carrying rabies.
Never touch a grounded bat!
If you find a downed bat:
If it is alive, leave it alone. Bats can take off from the ground. If it is dead, do not touch it with your bare hands. (Not all bats have rabies.) You may pick it up with a shovel or plastic bag and place both the bat and the bag into another plastic bag, spray with disinfectant, close the bag securely, and dispose of it with your garbage. Thoroughly wash your hands and any clothing that comes into contact with the bat.
To report a bat or other animal that you believe may have rabies, call the 24-hour number for the Georgetown Police Department at 512-930-3510. An animal control officer will respond to the report.
If there is a possibility of either pet or human exposure to a bat, please contact Animal Services immediately, 512-930-3592. Animal Services will collect the bat to submit it for rabies testing at the Texas Department of Health.

Gas Leak Update from Atmos Energy
On Feb. 20, businesses and residents near 507 River Bend in Georgetown were evacuated to repair an underground natural gas leak. Some of the area continues to be closed as it contains unique soil conditions that slow the ventilation of gas. Atmos Energy is using equipment to ventilate the soil and remove natural gas trapped under the ground.
Currently, 61 businesses and 26 residences in the vicinity of Williams Drive and River Bend have been evacuated. If you have errands in the area, it i s advised that you call ahead to make certain that the business is open before driving there. Please Click Here to read the entire update.
