Water Matters – Using the water
budget/seasonal adjust feature

Submitted by Carlton M. Mathis, Common Area and
Irrigation Superintendent

There have been inquiries as to what is meant
by using the water budget/seasonal adjust
feature on your irrigation system controller.
Greater detail can be found in your controller-
                       specific manual which is recommended
reading for anyone trying to operate and
program their system, but I will attempt to
summarize it here.
The water budget/seasonal adjust feature is a percentage-based
shortcut option that can save you time programming your
controller as the seasons and temperature change throughout
the year. It is a global setting that affects all programs in your
controller. As an example, if a program has a total run time of
four hours, a 50 percent water-budgeted/seasonally adjusted
setting will only run for two hours. The best way to set it up is
to establish a program that will water your lawn effectively and
efficiently during average summer conditions. This is going to
be your 100 percent setting.
Rather than changing the run times for each station as
temperatures cool down or heat up, simply adjust the percentage
of water being used. As a rule of thumb, the percentage values
for each season are as follows: summer 100 percent, spring and
fall 50 percent and winter zero percent or off.
The Water Matters Team is available to help you become familiar
with your irrigation system. If you need help setting up your
controller or would like a complete and thorough evaluation of
your irrigation system, send an email to WaterMatters@SCTexas.
org or contact your neighborhood representative. A Water Matters
Ambassador will come to your home to assist you.
