Known as The Quadrangle and built in 1876, Fort Sam Houston
supplied the western forts and served as a depot for troops on
the Rio Grande frontier. Today it houses a museum that tells the
story of a fort interwoven into the history of the town that grew
up around it. The story includes notable leaders and notorious
outlaws such as Geronimo, the legendary Apache chief who was a
prisoner at Fort Sam. Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders

outside the walls, and General Pershing led troops from The
